The Cavalier Cowboys are a Cowboy Action Shooting Club based near Montpelier, Virginia. We are associated with the Cavalier Rifle & Pistol Club which is where we hold our matches. We shoot on the 1st Sunday and 2nd Wednesday of every month, with some exceptions. The Cavalier Cowboys are a SASS (Single Action Shooting Society) Affiliated Club, we are governed by and operate our matches under all SASS Rules.
You DO NOT have to be a member of either Cavalier Rifle & Pistol Club or SASS to shoot with us, everyone is welcome to join us as our guests.
NEW Shooters are Welcome and Encouraged!! If you have ever wondered how much fun it is too dress up like a cowboy and shoot 1800 era pistols, rifles and shotguns at steel targets then COME ON OUT and find out!! New Shooters need to have observed a full match (at Cavalier or elsewhere) before shooting their first match.
Thanks, Major B.S. Walker

SASS has just announced that effective immediately all SASS Sanctioned Cowboy Action Shooting matches are to be scored using Total Time.
You can read the announcement below from SASS.
A “sanctioned” match is when there is a contract between SASS and the match organizers that defines how the match will be conducted. This includes state matches, state blackpowder matches, regional matches, divisional matches and etc..
Previously SASS directed that regional and above matches use Rank Points for scoring and matches at the state level and below could use either Rank Points or Total Time for scoring.
The Cavalier Cowboys have always used Rank Points, specifically because that was the scoring system used at the major SASS matches.
Therefore, we will continue with our practice of using the scoring system used by SASS at it’s major matches and we will switch to Total Time scoring, effective immediately.

The Cavalier Cowboys held a work day on Sunday November 9th, 2014.
We replaced bad boards and completed other repairs to the picnic tables, replaced bad boards in the floor of the Dead Dog Saloon, installed door latches and equipment holders on the Outhouse Storage Shed, installed coat rack hooks on the Windhorse Stables, closed in some roofs gaps in the saloon roof, and installed the new Cavalier Cowboys, Double C Sign atop the Dead Dog Saloon.
Because of the short days and it getting dark at 5:30, we didn’t get everything on the to do list completed, but a very good work day and a very big Thank You to everyone who came out and helped.
-Striker
PS – Before and after the Wednesday November 12th cowboy match, we finished the Cavalier Cowboys Sign installation with the sun roof and trim boards. We were also able to complete the roof repairs on the Dead Dog Saloon. The only remaining to do item is to spray all of the wood buildings and props with water seal.
The Cavalier Cowboys will recognize a new local category entitled; “Wild West”. This is NOT an official SASS category and is only available at our regular monthly matches.
The objective of the category is two fold; First to allow cowboy shooters to use a variety of firearms and shooting styles within a single match and second to allow different shooting categories to compete against each other within a single category.
The “Wild West” category is define as follows:
Cowboys & Cowgirls,
The Cavalier Cowboys would like to thank all the cowboys and cowgirls who joined us today for our match, it was a great day of shooting with our pards.
You may have noticed that when the stages were sent out on Tuesday before the match, they did not contain a story line nor starting lines, well that was because we had something special planned and wanted to make it a surprise. Today is Sassy Shooting Sours 60th birthday and her first time shooting in the senior category. We had the reading of a special story line, written in her honor, presented her with a birthday cake, we had the bays decorated for the occasion and sang her Happy Birthday. For those of you who were not able to make the match today, the stages are attached, complete with the story line we used today at the match.
Sassy asked that I pass along this message from her: “THANK YOU to everyone, especially the “Cavalier Cowboys” for making today very special. Think age caught up to me today! Sassy”.
The scores from today are attached in both PDF and MS Excel formats. Congratulations to Virginia Rifleman and Prairie City Slim as our two Clean All Day Shooters. Congratulations to Cody Maverick as our Top Overall Shooter.

On March 1st, 2013, the Kuba Kid retired as the Territorial Governor and President of the Cavalier Cowboys. During the previous 10 years Kuba Kid and his wife Dixie Jules established the current day cowboy action program at the Cavalier Rifle & Pistol Club and built it into what it is today, a first class cowboy action shooting program. The Cavalier Cowboys started with a few plates of steel, which Kuba sold his personal 1911 pistol to pay for, shooting in an open field and has matured into a dedicated cowboy action shooting area, with a permanent Dead Dog Saloon and Windhorse Stables shooting buildings and a huge collection of steel and action targets. The Cavalier Cowboys are proud to honor Kuba and Dixie for all of their hard work, dedication and service over the last 10 years !!!! YEEE HAAA !!!!!!!

For you new shooters; “Cowboy Casual” is an optional, relaxed dress code to allow you to better address shooting in hot, humid weather as follows:
Hats – which are not required but recommended to keep the sun off your top knot must be “cowboy”, no baseball or other modern hats.
Clothes – do not have to be “cowboy”, shorts, short sleeves, t-shirts are all allowed. We just ask that you wear clothes appropriate for a family shooting event and remember that the hot piece of brass coming out of your rifle can find itself into interesting places that tend to burn.
Shoes – do not have to be “cowboy” but must be appropriate for shooting and moving, no open toe, sandals, flip flops, etc..
The Dress Code decision is made by the Match Director for the match and is based upon the weather forecast for Montpelier, Virginia for the day/time of the match.
